Teachers in the Movement Institute
The Teachers in the Movement Institute is a community-engaged research institute dedicated to documenting, studying, and sharing the lives and work of educators and the communities they serve. Through oral history, historical research, ethnography, and collaborative community studies, the Institute produces scholarship that connects the past to the educational and civic questions of our time.
Today, we are expanding this work by creating a living archive of teachers who have taught from 1980 to the present. These new interviews—conducted both in person and virtually—capture the everyday creativity, care, and problem-solving that define teaching in our time.
Our purpose
- Research the history and contemporary experiences of educators and their communities.
- Preserve voices, memories, and histories that might otherwise be lost.
- Engage communities as partners in producing and interpreting knowledge.
- Share research through archives, publications, documentaries, exhibitions, and other forms of public scholarship.
What We Do
Expanding the Living Archive — Conducting oral histories with educators across generations to document the changing landscape of teaching, education, and community life.
Scholarship for the Public Good — Transforming research into books, articles, reports, archives, documentaries, exhibitions, podcasts, and other forms of public scholarship.
Soul Work — Advancing a communally grounded approach to research that emphasizes deep listening, trust, intuition, and meaningful engagement with communities.
Community-Engaged Research — Partnering with communities, schools, governments, and cultural institutions to conduct historical, oral history, and ethnographic research.
Why It Matters
Every time we sit with a teacher and press “record,” we preserve a piece of the wisdom that holds communities together. These stories help us understand how educators guide young people, support families, and strengthen the places they call home.
